Privacy Policy
This Privacy Policy explains how the Memi app handles information when you use its language-learning features and related services. Contact us at [email protected] with privacy questions or requests.
1. Information we handle
| Information | How it is used |
|---|---|
| Account and session information An Apple sign-in identifier, an internal account ID, authentication/session records, and a device label where supplied. Apple may provide a name or email when you authorize sign-in; the current server sign-in flow uses the identifier rather than requiring a name or email. | Sign you in, associate learning data with your account, maintain sessions, and prevent unauthorized access. |
| Learning information Language preferences, saved words and cards, sentence bookmarks, examples, review and quiz results, saved videos, playback progress, learning activity, reminders, and Study Lock progress. | Provide lessons and review schedules, retain saved material, and synchronize supported account features. |
| AI inputs and results Words, sentences, caption excerpts and surrounding context, requested languages, generated explanations and translations, and generation-usage records. | Generate requested learning material, reuse cached results, enforce allowances, and control abuse and service costs. |
| Subscription information Product and transaction identifiers, purchase/expiry/revocation status, and an account token associated with your Memi account. | Verify purchases with Apple, enable Pro, and restore eligible purchases. Apple handles payment details; we do not receive your full card information. |
| Voice practice and clips Microphone audio during practice, speech-recognition results, and recordings or exported clips you choose to create. | Provide pronunciation and shadowing practice. Speech recognition uses Apple’s services and may process audio on Apple’s servers depending on device and language. The current clip exporter creates files on your device; sharing a clip sends it to the destination you choose. |
| Screen Time selections Apple-issued tokens for selected apps, categories, or web domains, and restriction settings. | Apply your Study Lock selections on the device and in app extensions. The current implementation stores selection tokens locally; learning goals and completion may be synchronized separately. |
| Technical and support information Request timing, error/status information, network information processed when connecting to services, and information you send when requesting help. | Operate and secure the service, investigate faults, and respond to you. |
Some information is stored on your device, including learning caches, preferences, Screen Time selections, and a web session used for YouTube. Other information is sent to our backend to provide account and learning features. This distinction does not mean that third-party services embedded in the app receive no information.
2. Why we use information
We use information to deliver features you request, maintain and protect your account, personalize your learning through your preferences and progress, verify Pro access, operate the service, respond to support requests, and meet applicable legal obligations. Where a legal basis is required, processing may be necessary to provide the service, based on your permission for optional features, required by law, or based on legitimate interests in security and reliability, subject to your rights.
We do not sell your personal information or use Memi account learning records for cross-app advertising tracking. Third-party video services may show advertising and process information under their own policies.
3. Service providers and sharing
- Apple: provides Sign in with Apple, App Store purchases, subscription verification, device permissions, and speech recognition. See Apple’s privacy information.
- AI processing: the current backend is configured to use Groq for text generation. Words, sentences, caption context, and requested languages needed for a generation are sent to the configured AI service. Provider retention and data-use practices are governed by its applicable policy and our service arrangement. We do not promise that a provider retains nothing or never uses data unless our arrangement establishes that. See Groq’s privacy policy.
- YouTube/Google: video playback, search, web sign-in, and related resources connect to their services. They may receive network/device information and use cookies or web storage, especially if you sign in. Your YouTube password is entered into Google’s web flow, rather than a Memi backend login form. See Google’s Privacy Policy and YouTube’s Terms of Service.
- Infrastructure: hosting, database, storage, and network providers process information needed to operate the backend and deliver content.
- Your chosen destinations: when you export or share a recording or clip, the app or service you select handles that content under its own terms.
Public-video captions and generated vocabulary or translations may be reused in service caches or learning catalogs. Do not include sensitive information in AI requests. We may disclose information when required by law, to protect rights and service security, or in a business transfer subject to applicable privacy protections.
Providers may process information in countries other than your own. Where applicable law requires safeguards for international transfers, those safeguards must be applied to the relevant processing arrangement.
4. Permissions and your choices
Microphone and speech-recognition access are requested for speaking features. Screen Time authorization is requested for Study Lock. You can refuse or revoke these permissions in iOS settings; the related features may then be unavailable. Manage notification permissions through iOS settings and reminder preferences through Memi.
You can manage saved learning material through the app’s supported controls, sign out of your Memi account, and reset the app’s YouTube web session in Settings. Resetting that session signs you out of YouTube in Memi and clears its stored web session; it does not delete your Google account. Manage subscriptions separately in Apple’s subscription settings.
5. Retention and deletion
We retain account and learning information while it is needed to provide your account and requested features. We may retain limited transaction, usage, security, or legal records where needed to verify access, prevent abuse, resolve disputes, or comply with law. Cached public learning material may outlast an individual account.
To request deletion of your Memi account and personal data, contact [email protected]. We may ask for information needed to verify account ownership. The current account-erasure process revokes sessions, removes the Apple identifier, and erases or marks supported account-learning records as deleted. Some database rows are logically deleted rather than immediately physically removed. Subscription and usage records, shared caches, provider records, and backups may have different retention requirements or removal schedules.
Signing out or deleting the app does not by itself erase backend data. A deletion request does not cancel an Apple subscription; cancel through Apple separately. Copies you exported or shared, and information independently held by Apple, Google, or another provider, must be managed with those services.
6. Privacy rights and security
Depending on where you live, you may have rights to access, correct, delete, or obtain a copy of personal information, limit or object to certain processing, withdraw permission, or complain to a relevant privacy authority. Contact [email protected] to make a request. We will assess requests under applicable law and verify your identity where needed. Withdrawing an optional permission does not affect processing already lawfully carried out.
We use access controls and technical measures intended to protect information. Internet transmission and storage cannot be guaranteed completely secure. Keep your device and Apple account secure and tell us if you suspect unauthorized access.
7. Children
Memi is intended for a general learning audience and is not designed to collect personal information from children below the age at which parental permission is required by applicable law without that permission. If you believe a child has provided personal information without required permission, contact us so we can investigate and take appropriate action.
8. Changes and contact
We may update this policy when our features or information practices change. We will update the date and provide additional notice where required. Material changes must be reflected in the app’s privacy disclosures as appropriate.
